The 64-man field for WGC-Dell Match Play was vacated the following week.
Only two qualifying players – No. 10 Justin Thomas and No. 32 Justin Rose – are out of action at the Austin Country Club, which will be the last game on the PGA Tour schedule for the foreseeable future.
Thomas, who has made it out of group play only once in five, told the Players Championship last week that he decided to play the Valspar Championship this week before taking a two-week break before entering the Masters.
“This is the place I love,” Thomas said of Innisbruck, where Valspar takes place. “I really, really like the golf course. I just feel like I have a very good chance of winning there if I go to play. I just, I just don’t think about the Austin Country Club. ; I just played it six times, and five of them I played very badly. and I felt like I had a much better chance of winning than participating in a prestigious event, a huge event that is Match Play, but knowing that I did not succeed, except – I would hate to call this year random, but one year. And I didn’t really want to take a three-week vacation in front of the masters.”
Ranked 77th in the Official World Golf Rankings, Justin Su is currently the last man in the field.
Eleven members of the LIV are ranked among the top 75 in the world but are suspended from the PGA Tour and thus cannot compete in Tour events.
The 16 groups of four for the three-day round robin will be determined on Monday.
