The Schwinn IC4 Belt Driven Bike is a good addition to any home gym and a great choice for cardio enthusiasts. It has come a long way since the last iteration, IC3. Some of the major updates include integrated app technology that pairs with apps like Zwift and Peloton and the addition of quiet magnetic resistance pads rather than friction pads.
Interactive programming has become something of a standard for exercise bikes these days. When Peloton entered the market, it made a splash, forcing other exercise bike manufacturers to adapt. The Schwinn IC4 Indoor Cycling Bike is a less expensive alternative to the Peloton that offers app connectivity, comfort, durability and more.
- Cheaper than similar counterparts
- Lightweight and easy to move
- Smooth, quiet ride
- Compatible with popular apps like Zwift and Peloton.
- Integrated holder for iPad or tablet
- 100 adjustable resistance levels
- Lack of built-in workouts on the built-in screen
- Assembly is not very practical
- LCD screen metrics are not as detailed as many popular fitness apps.
Who should (and should not) buy a Schwinn IC4 indoor bike?
When it comes to overall performance and durability, the Schwinn IC4 is excellent value for money. With a $999 price tag, near-silent magnetic resistance, and Bluetooth connectivity, this is a great exercise bike for many people, including:
- For those looking for a smooth and quiet ride
- For those looking for strength and durability
- For those who love Peloton but don’t want to spend that much money
Even with excellent value for money, the IC4 does not lead the market for training bikes with integrated technologies. We do not recommend it for certain categories of people, including:
- Those who want manual air bike control
- For those who want a built-in monitor or other high-tech integrations
- For those who want an exact match of metrics between their favorite fitness apps and LCD display.
Factors to Consider When Choosing a Schwinn IC4 Indoor Exercise Bike
The Schwinn IC4 bike is 49 inches long and 21 inches wide. In fact, this is a standard exercise bike. While it’s certainly not the most compact bike on the market, it will fit perfectly in your average garage, gym, or apartment. Of course, you just need to make sure there is an outlet nearby.
Part of the reason this bike is so stable and quiet is because it features a 40lb flywheel for high quality magnetic drag. Some bikes create drag using bike pads, although magnetic drag is a more durable option since you don’t have to replace worn pads.
With the addition of that 40-pound flywheel, the bike weighs 106 pounds, making it relatively easy to get around on your own using front wheels attached to the bottom.
The IC4 frame is strong and stable, handling up to 300 pounds with ease. You will hardly feel any wiggle or wobble even if you start pedaling hard. This is because there are two supporting stabilizers at the front and rear of the bike, as well as a center bar for extra support that connects the two stabilizers.
When you need to roll your bike, you can use the two front red wheels. It’s worth noting that while the frame is made from heavy-duty steel, it’s prone to corrosion, so we don’t recommend leaving it outside.
Professional advice: Place a bike mat under the Schwinn IC4 to minimize floor vibrations and protect the floor from sweat.
Like a regular exercise bike, the Schwinn IC4 has a padded racing-type seat. If you are not used to such bikes, the seat may not be the most comfortable for you. It features a slim, performance-focused design built for intense cycling workouts; however, it is easy to change your seat to one you find more comfortable. In addition, the seat is fully adjustable: it moves up and down and from side to side, adapting to riders located between four feet five inches and six feet five inches. This adjustment option helps the driver feel more personalized.
The pedals are designed for both cycling shoes and regular sneakers. On the one hand you will find SPD clamps that allow you to clip on your favorite pair of cycling shoes; on the other hand there caged toe for pedaling in sneakers or sneakers. If you don’t plan on using a spin bike shoe for cycling training, we recommend using athletic shoes with hard soles to give you extra support under your foot. Stiffer shoes won’t flex on the pedals when you get up or apply extra pressure.
If you’re not a big fan of self-training and enjoy following a trainer, you’re in luck. The Schwinn IC4 is compatible with a range of applications including the Zwift App, Peloton App, and JRNY App.
JRNY app yearly membership included. in the price of a Schwinn IC4 bike. After that, it costs $19.99/month or $149/year. You will need a tablet or similar device to use as a display screen. JRNY has several training options, instructor-led training and virtual riding courses. You can even find off-bike workouts to spice up your cardio routine, including HIIT, treadmill, and elliptical exercises.
With Schwinn IC4 Bluetooth integration, you can easily connect to your favorite apps just like any other Bluetooth product. Just open smart devices and turn on bluetooth. Then press the Bluetooth button on the bike to sync the devices. This includes the heart rate sensor that comes with the Schwinn IC4 bike.
One of our favorite ways to use the IC4’s connectivity is the Explore the World app by Schwinn. This app provides indoor cyclists with a wide selection of streets and trails from around the world to ride, with new destinations added every month. The Explore the World app costs $9.99 per month or $59.99 per year.
Stationary bikes do not use kinetic energy to propel themselves (like street bikes) so a weighted flywheel is needed to create momentum when pedaling. A well-balanced flywheel creates and maintains momentum and smooth pedaling. Flywheels that don’t have enough weight won’t have the right amount of inertia even to spin. This is why many inexpensive exercise bikes feel heavy and jerky. In contrast, the Schwinn IC4 uses high quality, 40 lb flywheel which keeps the bike stable even when riding at a high pace.
The Schwinn IC4 doesn’t have a large monitor for viewing programs, but it does have a simple backlit LCD, similar to what you might find on a regular exercise bike. Screen size three inches by two inches, and is located between the steering wheel. It must be connected for the Bluetooth connection to work.
The screen is mostly dark, with bright letters and numbers that provide metric information at a glance. Displayed data includes heart rate, resistance level, distance, speed, estimated calories burned, elapsed time, and cadence.
Five buttons below the screen control various display functions, making navigation more intuitive for those who don’t consider themselves very tech-savvy. The device holder and USB charging port are located just above the built-in display. Please note that some Android users have said that they had a slight delay between the LCD display and the readings on their connected devices.
Setup and Assembly
The Schwinn IC4 bike comes with free shipping and the option to pay a non-refundable $150 for home assembly. You can install the bike yourself using three-step assembly instructions, but note that each step has several sub-steps. You need to make sure you have placed your bike near a power outlet in order to use its full functionality. While you can still manually adjust resistance levels and pedal your bike without plugging it in, you won’t be able to use the Bluetooth connection or console display without power.
