Merrifield was acquired Tuesday in a trade with Kansas City for two minor league players. The two-time All-Star was a starter at center field for his first game with his new team on Thursday night in Minnesota.

Merrifield was among 10 Royals players who were not vaccinated last month, preventing them from traveling to Toronto. When asked about his decision, Merrifield drew the ire of Kansas City fans by saying, “Something is going on and I’m on a team that has a chance to play in Canada in the postseason, maybe that will change.”

Toronto leads the AL standings in an attempt to make the playoffs for the second time in three years. The Blue Jays’ next home game will be on August 12 against the Cleveland.

Toronto manager John Schneider said Merrifield would play almost every day in a variety of positions, most likely second base and center.
