Even Jed Hoyer doesn’t seem to know who the cornerstone of “the next great cubs team.”

“You asked about poles,” Cubs President Jed Hoyer said on “Cap and Jay Hood” on ESPN 1000 on Wednesday. “A picture of what the next great Cubs team looks like, on an easel.

“But at the moment it’s not in full focus, and I don’t think it could be.”

If Hoyer has bigger ideas, he doesn’t want to talk about it.

“I think as far as the pillars – we talk a lot about building the core – I think I would be wrong in my job if I sit here and kind of list which players in our system, which players in our team I believe . are part of that,” Hoyer said.

Even 10 years ago, in the early stages of their most recent recovery, the Cubs were open about Anthony Rizzo and Starlin Castro as future cornerstones, as well as referencing Jeff Samargia from time to time.

As they are now being rebuilt for the second time in a decade, there is no time frame for the Cubs’ next great team. And given where they are in their current process, it’s still too early to tell who these next cornerstones will be, or who will be in place at all.

Cubs prospects are in the lower levels of the minor leagues. Christopher Morel shone this season, but only spent a month in the big leagues.

The Cubs hold Caleb Kilian, their most anticipated pitching prospect since Mark Pryor, in high regard, but he made fewer than a few starts and struggled with team problems.

Wilson Contreras is set to become a free agent this winter and Ian Happ next.

That is why even Hoyer does not have an exact timeline for how long this restructuring will last.

“I have an idea of how to build the next great team and where we want to go,” he said in lengthy media session last week. “I didn’t give you any sense of time. In fact, I don’t have it.”
