Who is Callum Tarren? Apart from one of the contenders after 3 to 67 on Thursday at The Country Club.

This is a 31-year-old Englishman who is completely exempt from the PGA Tour thanks to his finish in the 2020-21 Korn Ferry Tour Finals. So far this week, he has made 17 starts of the season, hitting the top 10 once and missing 10 times. him 107th in the FedExCup Points List and ranked 445th in the Official World Golf Rankings.

The Radford University product qualified for the US Open by placing one of three in the final qualifier at the Ontario, Canada site. He was also in the North last week for the RBC Canadian Open where he missed the cut. Then his clubs missed their flight to Boston.

“I came here, no clubs,” he said after the first round. “There were five other players on my flight. Everyone had golf clubs, so this was the second US Open I played and the second time without golf clubs.”

Tarren also qualified for the 2019 Pebble Beach Open by scoring 73–75 but missed the net. He explained that his clubs did not arrive until Wednesday of that week in the Monterey Peninsula, but arrived on Sunday in Brooklyn.

“Fortunately, there was someone in Canada who went to the airport and kicked the airport staff a bit,” he said.

After playing the course on Sunday and then playing 18 holes on Monday and nine holes each on the next two days, Tarren came out on the first day and recorded one eagle, three birdies and two ghosts.

And if you’re surprised to see his name next to McIlroy’s, you’re not alone.

“I’m kind of pinching myself because, like you said, I didn’t understand [my name] was at the top of the leaderboard until I made my last try on the ninth hole (his 18th),” he said. “Just excited about my start and we’ll see what happens in the next few days.”
