Wimbledon 2022: Rafael Nadal confirms intent to play in tournament for first time since 2019

After winning the French Open, Rafael Nadal confirmed on Friday that he intends to play at Wimbledon for the first time in three years. According to ESPNNadal confirmed his intentions at a press conference in Mallorca, Spain.

Nadal has previously said he will not play at Wimbledon if a medical procedure to treat his Mueller-Weiss syndrome, a condition that causes chronic leg pain, fails. But after undergoing radiofrequency nerve ablation and training on grass for a week, Nadal said he felt different and would take part in Wimbledon in an attempt to push his record of Grand Slam titles to 23.

“[The medical treatment] Made in Barcelona not 100% right away, but the changes are noticeable, Nadal said. – I noticed them, strange sensations, joint pains decreased. I intend to play at Wimbledon and go to London on Monday.”

Nadal warned that his Wimbledon performance is not an absolute decision as his foot needs to be assessed on a daily basis.

Despite this, Nadal has already had an outstanding 2022, winning the Australian Open and the French Open.

Two-time Wimbledon singles champion Nadal will play in the English tournament for the first time since 2019, when he lost in the semi-finals to Roger Federer. The COVID-19 pandemic led to the cancellation of the 2020 tournament and Nadal withdrew from the 2021 tournament due to his physical condition.
