CHARLOTT, North Carolina. It says a lot about the strength of the US Presidents’ Cup team that their best player has scored only half a point in three games, and yet the Americans are still in power.
World No. 1 Scotty Sheffler will miss Saturday afternoon’s fourball session at Quail Hollow after he and partner Sam Burns suffered another loss, this time to Tom Kim and KH Lee 2-1.
Scheffler and Burns, one of his best friends, are 0-2-1 this week. In a match they drew, they conceded a six-hole double lead.
Scheffler became the second world number one to fail to win any of his first three Presidents’ Cup matches, joining Nick Price in 1994.
Scheffler’s early play at Quail Hollow appears to be a continuation of his disappointing final round at the Tour Championship, where he took a six-shot lead on the final day to lose FedExCup and his $18 million bonus. This is his first start since East Lake.
However, the Americans maintained their six-point lead, 10-4, in the afternoon.
Cam Young and Colleen Morikawa, who lost in the morning four, will also miss the afternoon session for the US team, which hopes to improve this result to 12-1-1.
