Marlon Moraes will still be in the big PFL event later this month.
The promotion announced Monday night that the former WSOF champion and one-time UFC title challenger will take on Shamon Moraes at the PFL Championship on November 25 at the Hulu Theater in Madison Square Garden. The opponent change came about due to an undisclosed injury to Shane Burgos.
The 145-pound bout will take place on a preliminary card that will air on ESPN+.
Moraes, 34, announced his retirement after losing a first round knockout to Son Yadong at UFC Vegas 50 in March – his fourth loss in a row – before changing his mind and signing with the PFL to compete in the featherweight division. . After earning a bantamweight title shot against Henry Cejudo at UFC 238 in June 2019, the Magic went 1-5 with five stoppages, with the only victory going to José Aldo via split decision at UFC 245 in December 2019.
Moraes, 32, competed in the 2022 featherweight season and went 1-1, not enough to earn him a playoff spot. Before losing a decision to Lance Palmer in June, Moraes won three straight matches, including victories over Jesse Stearn and Lazar Stojadinovic in 2021.
The main event of the PFL Championship will be the final bout of the season in the lightweight division between Kayla Harrison and Larissa Pacheco. The main card of the event will air on ESPN+ PPV, although the price has yet to be announced.
