Canada men’s soccer head coach John Herdman was forced to clarify some of his comments after his post-game interview went viral on Wednesday, when his club lost to Belgium in the first leg of the World Cup.

Canada outplayed their opponent 22-9 but ultimately failed to get into the net. Herdman said he told his players that the next target would be Croatia in the second group stage match on Sunday.

The Croatian media was not enthusiastic about Herdman’s sentiments, and he offered further explanation for his comments during his media appearance on Thursday.

“I mean, you say things like that in a passionate moment, trying to inspire your team in the crowd,” Herdman said. “And when you are asked the question: “What did you say in this crowd?” This is what I said. This is not very respectful towards the Croatian people and the Croatian team. I understand very well where we are on the world stage, but at this moment you are entering this next place, you are leading your team to this next place where we are here to be fearless and put everything we have into this . the game.

“I don’t mean to disrespect the Croatian team and the Croatian people, but in the end Canada will think if we are going to score three points against one of the best teams in the world. And this is the way of thinking that we brought to Belgium. We should; it is part of “New Canada”.

Somewhat surprisingly, this was recorded as a controversy. What else should a manager say to his players after a crushing defeat when they were the better side for the vast majority of the competition? This may have been interpreted by some as Herdman’s underestimation of Croatia’s 2018 World Cup runners-up.

The Canadian pace should give the older Croatian squad a bit of a break, though Luka Modric is a world-class linebacker and a weapon that Herdman’s team simply doesn’t have. With Canada in last place in Group F and Croatia drawing against Morocco in the first leg, Sunday’s clash could be one of the tournament’s best, and Herdman’s comments have added extra motivation to Modric and company.
