England and the US will face off in Group B of the World Cup in a huge game with so many storylines twisted around and Gregg Berhalter’s young team needs to be upset.

[ MORE: Projected starting lineup for USA vs England ]

Whenever the US and England meet, there are so many narratives that come up and this will be no exception.

After a 1-1 draw against Wales in the first leg of the World Cup, all is not lost. However, it was a disappointing result after dominating the first half and the US needs at least a point against England to qualify for their last group game against Iran with a good chance of reaching the round of 16.

As for England, Gareth Southgate’s team dominated their 6-2 win over Iran to start their Group B campaign and they will want to secure a place in the round of 16 as soon as possible. Their defense did look a bit shaky against Iran, so let’s see if the USMNT can spot any weaknesses.

Key storylines, players to keep an eye on

Berhalter is under pressure to start the likes of Brenden Aaronsohn and Gio Reina (who hasn’t played against Wales at all despite being 100 per cent ready) as the USMNT need to win the ball more high up the pitch. They did it again and again against Wales and had to score for a couple of goals before the Welsh made a tactical change to which Berhalter did not respond well. Bringing Christian Pulisic and Tim Weah together in the final third will be key and the US will need to hold the ball better than they did against Wales if they want to get anything out of this game. However, the US beat England in the 1950 World Cup in one of the biggest shocks in history, and they drew 1–1 in 2010, the last time they met in that tournament. Gregg Berhalter confirmed that McKenney and Dest are both ‘fine’ and that Reyna’s absence against Wales was a ‘manager’s decision’ and that he is ready to play against England.

The Three Lions were irresistible in attack against Iran and Bukayo Saka, Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane worked together so well. However, Kane had injury concerns as he was scanned for an ankle hit prior to this encounter, but he is ready to play. Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice were great in central midfield, but in the second half England looked a little unsure in central defence. The fact that England could take Phil Foden, Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford off the bench in attack shows their incredible squad strength. Harry Maguire is also fit, as is Kyle Walker after he missed the last few months with an injury.

England vs USA face to face

  • This is the 12th meeting in history between the US and England. US Overall Score 2-8-1 (WLD)
  • This is the third meeting of these teams at the World Cup.
  • The US famously won in 1950 and drew with England in the group stage of the 2010 World Cup.

Gareth Southgate Confirms Harry Kane Ready to Play USA

“Harry is fine. He worked a bit apart from the band, but it’s all good for a Friday night,” Southgate said. “He had a scan [on Wednesday] to make sure everything is in order.”

“We have to make sure we get back to the mental state we were in at the beginning, because the States will be a sports team, they will press very well, they will be organized, they will train well. They have quite a few players that we know from the Premier League and in the first half against Wales they did their best,” added Southgate.

Gregg Berhalter on Southgate, Premier League Power, Generation Golden Tag

“Every Saturday morning Americans watch the league and then they see all the fan fests, it’s an incredible league. We are very proud that our players play there. To me, it’s like the NFL in terms of how dominant it is,” Berhalter added.

Gregg Berhalter has some big decisions to make, especially if he can get Brenden Aaronsohn and Gio Reyna into the starting XI without impacting his team’s balance sheet.

It also depends a lot on the USMNT approach as they can sit back and watch how to counter England or maybe they go all out with high pressing which worked…
